Hebrews 2:14-15 - Freedom From Fear
You've heard the slogan: Facts Over Fear. Will knowing "the facts" overcome my fears? Maybe.
If I'm afraid that my car needs a new transmission and the mechanic says, no, you just need a new filter,
then facts have overcome fear.
If I'm afraid that I'm going blind and the eye doctor says, no, you just need a stronger eye glass prescription,
then the facts have overcome my fear.
If I think I'm going to to die, and my oncologist says, yes, you have only a month to live,
then facts don't do much to overcome my fear. I need more than facts.
Of all the things we might be afraid of, isn't that "the biggie?" We're not afraid of getting sick if we know that we're going to get better. But without any hope, we're enslaved to fear. That's why the Bible says that the "the last enemy to be destroyed is death [itself]." (1 Corinthians 15:26)
God gave us more than facts; He gave us His Son
Hebrews 2:14-15 Because God’s children are human beings—made of flesh and blood—the Son also became flesh and blood. For only as a human being could he die, and only by dying could he break the power of the devil, who had the power of death. 15 Only in this way could he set free all who have lived their lives as slaves to the fear of dying.
The resurrecton of Jesus--that's what gives us freedom from fear.
When I tread the verge of Jordan,
Bid my anxious fears subside;
Death of death, and hell’s destruction,
Land me safe on Canaan’s side.
Songs of praises, songs of praises,
I will ever give to Thee;
I will ever give to Thee.
- William Williams
Give us the faith, Father, to walk in the freedom of knowing that Jesus has conquered death, that He has overcome the worst that satan could throw at us. For the hope of Resurrection, we give you thanks. Amen.
