Luke 24:18 - Headlines
Think about headlines for a moment. Not today's headlines, but headlines in general.
After the resurrection, there were two of Jesus' disciples walking from Jerusalem to a town called Emmaus, seven miles away. As they walked, they were talking about the latest events in Jerusalem. Out of nowhere, Jesus Himself fell in step with them. Though walking right next to Him, they didn't recognize Him.
Luke 24:17-18
He asked them, “What are you discussing so intently as you walk along?”
They [stopped in their tracks], sadness written across their faces.
...One of them... replied, “You must be the only person in Jerusalem who hasn’t heard about all the things that have happened there the last few days.”
Playing dumb, Jesus asked:
“What things?”
They told him the headlines: Jesus of Nazareth was a prophet, healer, and teacher. They had hoped that He was also the Messiah, sent to rescue them from Caesar and set up a Jewish kingdom. Instead, Jesus had been crucified. But now there were rumors that He was alive.
They were telling the story of Jesus to Jesus Himself!
As they continued walking, Jesus explained how the Old Testament prophesied that all these things would happen. When they reached the town of Emmaus, Jesus acted like He was going to continue walking. Out of hospitality they urged this stranger to have supper and spend the night.
When Jesus broke the loaf of bread to begin their meal, their eyes were finally opened. They realized who had just spent the past several hours with them.
Here's the point: They were so overwhelmed with the latest news, they didn't realize Jesus was walking with them. Do today's headlines blur our own discernment of Jesus' presence?
Lord, Cut through the noise of the latest headlines. Let us see You as we walk through our day. Amen.
