Matthew 6:34 - Enough Evil
There are passages of scripture that are difficult to understand, or seem puzzling. But those are the ones that are most intriguing. What is God trying to say?
Matthew 6:34 is one of those passages. Jesus said:
"So do not worry about tomorrow; for tomorrow will care for [literally, "worry about"] itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own."
But the last phrase is the one that seems... well, odd. It literally means:
"Sufficient for the day is its evils."
I can understand that we shouldn't borrow from tomorrow's worries, but
what does it mean that we will have "sufficient evil" or "enough trouble" for today?
How much is evil is "sufficient?"
How much trouble is "enough?"
This verse comes at the end of the chapter where we read, in the Lord's Prayer,
"Give us THIS day our DAILY bread."
This chapter is also where Jesus tells us not to worry about our life,
God clothes the fields with flowers; He'll provide our clothing.
God feeds the birds; He'll provide our food.
"Seek His kingdom first--and all this will be taken care of."
So here's what I think God is saying.
Taking one day at a time, what is the worst that will happen today?
Whatever it is, God will be there.
We aren't to deny that bad things will happen, but He knows.
And He will give us whatever we need to face it.
My hope is built on nothing less
Than Jesus' blood and righteousness;
I dare not trust sweetest frame,
But wholly lean on Jesus's name.
On Christ the solid Rock, I stand;
All other ground is sinking sand
All other ground is sinking sand.
When darkness veils His lovely face.
I rest on His unchanging grace
In every high and stormy gale
My anchor holds within the veil
On Christ the solid Rock, I stand;
All other ground is sinking sand
All other ground is sinking sand.

Our Father in heaven,
Whatever good this day holds, whatever evil this day may bring, give us faith to trust that You are bigger... that Your love will hold on to us and provide whatever we need most. In Jesus' name, Amen.
