Matthew 25:40 - Water
I offer this devotional in honor of one of my former students, who graduates today from the nursing program at Northwest Iowa Community College. MaKayla DeBondt also works as a CNA here at Sheldon Senior Care!
Some day in the future, when Jesus reigns as King, He will say,
Matthew 25:35 "‘I was thirsty, and you gave Me drink..." v.37 “Then the righteous will answer Him, saying, ‘Lord, when did we see You ...thirsty, v.40 “And the King will answer and say to them, ‘Truly I say to you, to the extent that you did it to one of these brothers of Mine, even the least of them, you did it to Me.’"
When I read this passage, I think of certain patients who aren't able to pick up a cup of water for themselves. But whenever MaKayla--or anyone of us--picks up that cup and offers someone water, they are giving it to Jesus!
I think of a time when I was debilitated from nausea after a medical procedure. I couldn't pick up a prescription, even if the pharmacy was open. Without being asked, a doctor drove to my house to drop off the medicine I needed. He didn't just do it for a patient; he did it for Jesus Christ.
After another procedure this week, groggy from anesthesia, I was fumbling to pull up my pants while dealing with a drain bag. I was humbled as a nurse knelt down to help me with such a simple task.
Multiple times a day we have an opportunity to help people get dressed, give them meds, or simply hold a cup so they can drink water. Those acts of service are more than loving people. It is serving Jesus Himself.
Lord God,
Give us the joy of serving You today. Bless those who have been doing so for decades. Bless those who graduate from school this spring to serve others. In Jesus' name, Amen.
