Acts 16:6-7 - "Heel!"

Once upon a time there were three missionaries who had big plans of where they would serve God. Paul, Silas and Timothy planned to share the love of God with people in Asia. But they were "forbidden by the Holy Spirit to speak the word in Asia." So they thought they'd try another place called Bithynia, but "the Spirit of Jesus did not permit them." (Acts 16:6-7, New American Standard Bible)

I've been trying to teach our puppy to heel. Dante (the pup) and I head out the door for a walk. At first he drags his feet as I pull on his leash. Then he trots alongside of me... until he pulls to the left, then he pulls to the right. He surges ahead. He decides to step between my feet; I stumble trying to keep from stepping on him. He hasn't grasped why I restrain his antics and say "Heel!" when there are so many things to investigate.

Dante doesn't know what destination I have in mind. He doesn't know I'm looking out for his safety. Beyond that, I want his companionship. Regardless of where we are headed, I want him by my side.

Paul and his companions weren't just on a lark to investigate what was beyond the length of a leash. They had plans--good, wholesome plans--and God said "Heel!" Paul wasn't told why, he just knew that God was roping him in.

Sometimes we are intent to do the right thing with the right motives. And God halts us in our tracks. He doesn't always explain why. Yet there is comfort and confidence that He is communicating His will... and He wants us by His side all the way.

Father in heaven, I want to be familiar enough with your Spirit's voice that I don't lunge ahead. Keep my heart ready to listen for when You tell me where to go and what to do, in Your time and in Your way. In Jesus' name, Amen.
