Hebrews 6:10 - God won't forget

Galatians 6:10 (New Living Translation) "Therefore, whenever we have the opportunity, we should do good to everyone—especially to those in the family of faith."

"Doing good" is part of the job sometimes. But this verse isn't limited to doing good for others "on the job," but , but whenever we have the opportunity. And while the "family of faith" should be a special concern, we should do good to everyone. The words "whenever" and "everyone" are pretty comprehensive!

It's not just about what we do, though. Motivation is all-important as well.

Jesus said,
“Watch out! Don’t do your good deeds publicly, to be admired by others, for you will lose the reward from your Father in heaven. ...But when you give to someone in need, don’t let your left hand know what your right hand is doing. [Do it] in private, and your Father, who sees everything, will reward you." Matthew 6:1, 3, 4 (NLT)

The good things we do may be seen by others. It may even be part of our job description. But it's the motivation that counts.
Am I hoping that others will admire my good deeds and give me a pat on the back?
How keenly do I feel the injustice of people ignoring my efforts?
What difference does it make if God is watching?

Hebrews 6:10 (NLT) "For God is not unjust. He will not forget how hard you have worked for him and how you have shown your love to him by caring for other believers, as you still do."

In other words:
Do good for "the family of faith" or for atheists. Do good on the job or off the job. Why? Because showing love to other people--who are made in the image of God--is ultimately showing love to God. And He's not unfair. He will remember.

God, Forgive me when I'm grinding away at doing good to impress people. Or simply to fulfill a duty or a job description. Motivate me to do good to everyone for the joy of knowing that You are watching, that You delight in seeing Your love at work in my life. In Jesus' name, Amen.
