Isaiah 11:6-7 - Mosquitoes and World Peace
"A Heaven for mosquitoes and a Hell for men
could very conveniently be combined."
- C. S. Lewis
I'm tempted to agree with Lewis.
Mosquitoes. Chiggers. Ticks. They love me. I hate them: flesh-eating, blood-sucking insects! (Yes, "flesh eating." I dare you to look up "chigger bites.") But when God "makes all things new" in a new heaven and a new earth, what becomes of these creatures? (2 Peter 3:13; Revelation 21:1-5)
Consider Isaiah 11:6–7
"And the wolf will dwell with the lamb, And the leopard will lie down with the young goat, And the calf and the young lion and the fatling together; And a little boy will lead them. 7 Also the cow and the bear will graze, Their young will lie down together, And the lion will eat straw like the ox." (New American Standard, 1995)
Sheep and cows have stomachs specially designed to eat grass, ruminate and chew cud. Wolves, leopards, bears and lions do not. At least not yet. Apparently, when God "makes all things new," He'll give carnivores new stomachs to go along with an appetite for eating grass.
It's the female mosquitoes that suck blood for protein to produce eggs. But in the New Earth, I suspect God will change things up so they stick with the flower nectar they otherwise drink.
God won't overlook any detail of a much larger picture. Isaiah's prophecy also says:
"He will judge between the nations, And will render decisions for many peoples; And they will hammer their swords into plowshares and their spears into pruning hooks. Nation will not lift up sword against nation, And never again will they learn war." Isaiah 2:4 (NASB95)
Thank you, Father in heaven, that "peace on earth" isn't just a slogan, nor do you leave us to try and achieve the impossible. Thank you that when You judge between nations You will make "all things new." And so we pray, "Your Kingdom come, Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven." In the name of the Prince of Peace we pray, Amen.
