Lamentations 3:22-23 - Fresh Starts

In a famous passage, Jeremiah wrote:

"The Lord’s lovingkindnesses indeed never cease, For His compassions never fail. They are new every morning; Great is Your faithfulness." Lamentations 3:22–23 (New American Standard, 1995)

I used to read this as, "God offers compassion by waking me up and giving me one more day of life."

But that sadly understates the love of God. "Compassions" is in the plural, and it's underscored with the phrase "They are new every morning." So what compassionS is Jeremiah talking about?

The context of Lamentations 3 refers to multiple sins that bring on God's judgment. Yet for those who "return to the Lord" (v.40ff), there is multiple forgiveness. Compassions in the plural means that each and every sin is forgiven. "As far as the east is from the west, so far has He removed our transgressions from us."  Psalm 103:12 (NASB95)

For every failure or sin of yesterday, there is another extension of God's compassions.
Every morning.
A fresh restart.

Father, Thank you that we don't have to be afraid of admitting the mistakes and sins of yesterday, because You keep offering your love, mercy, and compassions.
New every morning.
New again, this morning.  Amen
