Psalm 107:17-22 (Part Three) - Rebellious Fools Praise the Lord
Continuing with a series of people who cried out to God during a crisis, from Psalm 107...
v.17 Some were fools; they rebelled and suffered for their sins.
v.18 They couldn’t stand the thought of food, and they were knocking on death’s door.
v.19 “Lord, help!” they cried in their trouble, and he saved them from their distress.
v.20 He sent out his word and healed them, snatching them from the door of death.
v.21 Let them praise the Lord for his great love and for the wonderful things he has done for them.
v.22 Let them offer sacrifices of thanksgiving and sing joyfully about his glorious acts.
(New Living Translation)
This group of rebels are slightly different from the previous ones.
The rebels in v.11 were knowingly rebelling against the word of God. They knew what God has to say, and scorned it. The rebels in this section end up in desperate situations because of foolish choices.
Whether rebellion is more "active" or more "passive," the results can be the same... bringing people to a breaking point. In this case, their foolish choices have led to broken health--and brought them to "death's door."
Regardless of how they got to that point, their prayer is the same, simple, two-word cry:
"Lord, help!" God doesn't require them to explain more, or pray repeatedly. A heartfelt, humble cry to God brings the same response from God: He answers their prayer.
"Let them praise the Lord for his great love and for the wonderful things he has done for them." Amen
