Psalm 121:1-2 Help from a Higher Source

"I will lift up my eyes to the mountains; From where shall my help come? My help comes from the Lord, Who made heaven and earth." Psalm 121:1–2 (New American Standard Bible, 1995)

My wife and I just got back from a vacation that took us out west--over the Continental Divide and into mountainous highways in the foothills of the Rockies. On one stretch of highway going uphill I thought, "Boy, that would be a tough grade to hike or even take on a bicycle!"

Psalm 121 refers to the mountains because pagans used to worship gods or goddesses associated with different topographical locations. They might worship a mountain god as representing a place of safety and strength--an advantage when fighting a battle. So they would climb a mountain to implore their god for help.

But twice in this passage, the word "from" is used. I don't have to climb the mountains. My help comes from the God who created the mountains, and me, and everything else. "He sent from on high... He delivered me..." (Psalm 18:16-17, NASB95)

Father, Focus my eyes on You for help. You, a source of strength that's higher than the mountains which You Yourself created. In Jesus' name, Amen.
