2 Corinthians 4:6 - Flipping on the light switch
Why did Thomas Jefferson stay in the dark?
We already know that to see the glory of God, we look at what Jesus was like while He was on earth; we read the Gospels. Jesus said,
"I have come as Light into the world, so that everyone who believes in Me will not remain in darkness." (John 12:46, New American Standard Bible, 1995)
But there are plenty of people who read the Gospels and don't really believe in Jesus. For example, Thomas Jefferson created his own version called "The Life and Morals of Jesus of Nazareth." Using a razor and glue, he made a cut-and-paste Gospel that didn't have any of Jesus' miracles, and ended with His death. No divinity. No resurrection. You can find it at www.thejeffersonbible.com Or buy your own copy on Amazon.com, now! While Jefferson admired the morals of Jesus, he didn't take the Gospels at face value. He never saw the face of Christ.
Why do some people believe in Jesus Christ, and some don't? The light switch has to be turned on. We have all had the experience of entering a dark room where someone is lying in bed. Perhaps they are asleep or they are too sick to get up. Either way, they aren't able to turn on the light. Someone has to flip the switch for them.
That's what God does for us. Often He will use other people or experiences as means to turn on the light, as it were. But when it comes down to it, He's the one who helps us believe.
“For God, who said, 'Let there be light in the darkness,' has made this light shine in our hearts so we could know the glory of God that is seen in the face of Jesus Christ.” (2 Corinthians 4:6, New Living Translation)
God in heaven, we'd be stumbling in the dark without someone turning on the light. Thank you for doing that in our lives. Use us to help flip the light switch on for others as well. In the miraculous name of Jesus we pray, Amen.
