Isaiah 49:14-16 - What God Cannot Forget
The other day, after sharing, "When I Can't Think," one of the nurses admitted that she sent her daughter off to school without her backpack!
That's nothing. One time when my wife was a little girl, her mom forgot her at the grocery store and had to come back to find her. Even Mary and Joseph managed to leave Jesus behind in Jerusalem... for three days. (Luke 2:41-46) It happens!
It could be worse than a memory lapse:
Isaiah 49:14–16 (New Living Translation) Yet Jerusalem says, “The Lord has deserted us; the Lord has forgotten us.” 15 “Never! Can a mother forget her nursing child? Can she feel no love for the child she has borne? But even if that were possible, I would not forget you! 16 See, I have written your name on the palms of my hands.
Scars on my hands remind me of accidents.
A sliver of broken china got buried in a joint when I worked at the Hyatt, downtown Chicago.
While helping my dad install a ceiling, a section of drywall slipped through my grasp.
The Smith family dog, Snickers, biting a finger.
My own puppy's tooth accidentally ripping open the same finger.
God can't forget His children.
God can't forget what is written on His hands.
The names of His children were written on Jesus' hands at the Crucifixion.
And those scars were there after the Resurrection: reminders of His love for us.
Even in heaven, Jesus is known as "the Lamb who was slain." (Revelation 5:6,12)
Hebrews 2:10 (NLT) "God, for whom and through whom everything was made, chose to bring many children into glory. And it was only right that he should make Jesus, through his suffering, a perfect leader, fit to bring them into their salvation."
Hebrews 7:25 (NLT) "Therefore he is able, once and forever, to save those who come to God through him. He lives forever to intercede with God on their behalf."
Thank you, Lord, for writing us on Your hands, for your unfailing, undying love. Amen.
