Psalm 94:19 - Existentialism and Gnats
"When my anxious thoughts multiply within me, Your consolations delight my soul." (Psalm 94:19, New American Standard, 1995)
Sometimes "anxious thoughts" are a deep-seated angst created by an overwhelming sense of loss or fear. The precipitating cause may be known; maybe not. Either way, the mind and heart are paralyzed.
At other times "anxious thoughts" are minor irritations, like a gnat that constantly buzzes around ones ear. Or a fly, always a split second ahead of the fly swatter.
Regardless of the makeup of anxious thoughts, no matter their nature or severity, God has a corresponding consolation and peace that brings calm to the soul.
Lord God, whatever "anxious thought" I encounter today, large or small, make me sensible to the consolations that You offer to dis-place and re-place them. Amen
