Psalm 25 - Imperfect Waiting
"Waiting on God" is sometimes translated as "trusting in God" or "hoping in God."
It's a messy process. None of us does it perfectly.
In Psalm 25, David mentions waiting on God three times. Two of those times he is describing himself: "For You I wait all the day... I wait for You." (verse 3, 5, 21 - New American Standard Bible, 1995)
At the same time,
David's deficiency in goodness makes him confess:
"Do not remember the sins of my youth... pardon my iniquity, for it is great...forgive all my sins" (verses 7, 11, 18)
David's deficiency in knowledge prompts his plea:
"Make me know Your ways, O Lord, teach me Your paths.
Good and upright is the Lord; Therefore He instructs sinners in the way... "
(verses 4, 5, 8. See also 9, 12)
Those "messy" deficiencies didn't keep David from waiting on God, and it prompted him to seek God all the more.
Patient and merciful God,
We want to trust You more, we want to wait on You wholeheartedly. Forgive the sins that weaken our faith. Correct our thinking that gets in the way of Your wisdom directing our daily lives. In Jesus' name, Amen.
