Psalm 62:1-8 - The Silent Soul

David opens this psalm with,
"1 My soul waits in silence for God only; From Him is my salvation..."

David says that he had a good habit ("my soul waits in silence"), but we sometimes slip from what we know to be good for us.

So engages in some self-talk to remind himself:

"5 My soul, wait in silence for God only, For my hope is from Him.
6 He only is my rock and my salvation, My stronghold; I shall not be shaken.
7 On God my salvation and my glory rest; The rock of my strength, my refuge is in God.
8 Trust in Him at all times, O people; Pour out your heart before Him; God is a refuge for us. Selah."
 (New American Standard, 1995)

What does it mean to wait in silence since David also encourages us to, "Pour out your heart before God?"

The reason he uses language about God being a stronghold and refuge is because he's under attack from his enemies. Not just military attack, but verbal attack:
"They plan to topple me from my high position. They delight in telling lies about me. They praise me to my face but curse me in their hearts." Psalm 62:4 (New Living Translation)

David is silent toward his attackers, but not silent toward God.
Whether he is pouring out his heart to God audibly or silently,
he is telling his soul, his inner self, to wait quietly for God.

God, there are many things to distract us today. Some are regular responsibilities, some distractions are the concerns we have for friends and loved ones. People for whom we work and people with whom we work. People that are for us; people that are against us.
Regardless, quiet our souls to keep waiting for You--our strength, our refuge, our salvation. In Jesus' name, Amen.
