1 Peter 2:6 - Disappointed?
At sometime, you've been disappointed by something or someone.
Perhaps it's an item you bought online. You researched diligently. You read the reviews. You read the review-checkers to make sure the reviews are dependable. You find who has the best price. You pick out just the right make/model/color/size/whatever.
A few days later a box arrives. You find some scissors to cut the wrapping tape. Out comes the bubble wrap. There's the inner box!
But then you plug it in (if it's electrical)
Or you put it on (if it's clothing).
And it's just not what you expected. It doesn't deliver what was promised in the description and reviews. It's broken. Or flawed. It's a disappointment.'
Of course, there are much bigger disappointments than that. A new friend turns out to be less than dependable. That new job ends up having less benefits and more stress than anticipated. The new medication has more side effects than benefits.
On the other hand, Peter describes Jesus in this way:
“Behold, I lay in Zion a choice stone, a precious corner stone, And he who believes in Him will not be disappointed.” (1 Peter 2:6, NASB95. See Romans 9:33)
It is possible to have misconceptions about Jesus that lead to disappointment. But if we let Jesus be Jesus, if we trust Him to be who He says He is, then we won't be disappointed.
Jesus, We've had plenty of disappointments from time to time. Some trivial; some serious. Thank you that those disappointments push us closer to what is dependable. Give us the insight to see and understand You for who You really are. Deepen our faith in You, the one who will never disappoint us as Savior and Friend. Amen.
