Psalm 112:4 - Where's the light at the end of the tunnel?
Several years ago, my wife and I, along with some family members, rode bicycles on the Hiawatha Bike Trail. It is a fifteen mile section of what had been a train line between Idaho and Montana. There are ten trestle bridges that span the treetops, and seven train tunnels. https://www.ridethehiawatha.com/photo-gallery
The Saint Paul Pass Tunnel (a.k.a. Taft Tunnel) is over a mile and a half long. Once you get far enough into the tunnel, you see nothing. Since others in our group had a headlight, I wasn't worried about not having one. I just figured I'd be able to follow the others who had headlights. That didn't work out as planned. I fell behind and then I was in total, utter darkness. (They've since started requiring that everyone has to have a headlight.)
This tunnel is carved out of rock, with fissures and seams that allow runoff water to seep through. The floor of the tunnel has gutters on either side to catch the water dripping from the walls. The sound of water dripping was all I had to orient my bike to the center of the tunnel.
I took it on faith that others were telling me the truth, that the tunnel didn't go on forever. Or end into a dead end. But at the time, the darkness was unendingly oppressive.
There are other times when we see no light at the end of the tunnel. That's when we claim promises like:
"Light arises in the darkness for the upright; He is gracious and compassionate and righteous." (Psalm 112:4, New American Standard, 1995)
“Arise, shine; for your light has come, And the glory of the Lord has risen upon you. For behold, darkness will cover the earth and deep darkness the peoples; But the Lord will rise upon you and His glory will appear upon you. Nations will come to your light, And kings to the brightness of your rising." (Isaiah 60:1–3, NASB95)
Lord in heaven, sometimes it seems like there's no end in sight, and it's very disorienting. Keep us centered in You, despite our not being able to see landmarks around us. Of necessity we "walk by faith, not by sight" (2 Corinthians 5:7). We keep moving forward, knowing by faith that there is indeed light at the end of the tunnel. In the name of Your Son we pray, Amen.
