Psalm 139:15 - The Know-it-All Doctor
Lately, I've been going to a physical therapist for a rotated pelvis. Unfortunately, putting a name to it didn't automatically dull the pain. But having had an interest in anatomy and physiology since college, I asked the therapist exactly which muscles she was trying to get me to stretch and strengthen. They are muscles I didn't know existed until they started to hurt!
Most of us know where the bicep is. Did you know that there are actually four muscles that make up the bicep? Or two that make up the calf? Altogether, the human body has over 600 distinct muscles. 200+ bones. Then there's the nervous system, with different types of nerve cells. And the other systems and organs.
If something goes wrong, we go to a GP who may refer us to a specialist. Then there are subspecialists: like pediatric nephrologists, geriatric hematologists, etc. But I have yet to meet a doctor who is a specialist in how all the organs and body systems function together. There are only so many specialties that one person can master. That's why specialists have to consult with each other for patients who have multiple issues.
Fortunately, there is one physician that knows how everything should work together, and what's wrong when they're not working together. It's the Person who put it all together in the first place, the One who genuinely "knows it all."
We read in Psalm 139, "You watched me as I was being formed in utter seclusion, as I was woven together in the dark of the womb." (Psalm 139:15, New Living Translation).
We find comfort, Lord, that You know us so well: not only our bodies, but our minds and hearts, too. We pray for those who are struggling with their health, and for those trying to diagnose, treat and care for them. We look to You as not only the Creator, but the Sustainer of life, and the Redeemer of our eternal souls. In Jesus' name, Amen.
