Psalm 34:17-22 - Does God have an answering machine?
I've taken to screening most of my phone calls, especially in an election year. It was bad enough having spam calls to my landline but now I get them on my cell phone. Even as I write this, the light on my landline phone is blinking at me. I already know that one was labeled "FRAUDULENT CALL."
As I ignored the fourth spam call of the week, I thought of the prayers I've offered to God. I'm grateful for the promise that He doesn't screen my calls for help.
In Psalm 34, David wrote:
v.17 The righteous cry and the Lord hears, And delivers them out of all their troubles.
v.18 The Lord is near to the brokenhearted, And saves those who are crushed in spirit.
v.19 Many are the afflictions of the righteous; But the Lord delivers him out of them all.
Someone may read those verses and think,
"Yeah... right. I prayed for ___(fill in the blank) _________ and it just got worse."
Consider the next verse:
v.20 He [God] keeps all his bones; Not one of them is broken.
In New Testament times, it was the usual procedure of the Romans to crucify criminals for a certain period of time. If crucifixion hadn't yet killed those sentenced to death, they would break the legs of the condemned person to hasten death--albeit in the most painful way possible. It wasn't merely that the breaking of bones might bring on a state of shock. It meant that the criminal could no longer push themselves up to gasp for breath.
So here's this passage that says that the Lord "hears, and delivers [the righteous] out of all their troubles." But then the very promise of God not allowing a bone to be broken turns out to be a promise, a prophecy of exactly what would happen to Jesus at His crucifixion.
The only answer I find for this dilemma is in the last two verses of the Psalm:
v.21 Evil shall slay the wicked; And those who hate the righteous will be condemned.
v.22 The Lord redeems the soul of His servants; And none of those who take refuge in Him will be condemned.
Somehow, even in torture as painful as the cross, God promises redemption and refuge.
Justice will be justified.
Lord, when we call--or rather call out--to You, we know that you may not give us the answer we're hoping for, nor answer according to our time table. But give us the fortitude to leave it all in Your hands. In the name of Jesus the Crucified, Amen.
