Psalm 37 - A Time Share you CAN'T pass up!
A few years ago, my wife and I checked out some time share opportunities.
The timeshare corporation will put you up for a night, "FREE" ...if you agree to listen to their spiel. We figured we could endure the sales pitch for the sake of a free night in a hotel. We only did it two times. The second time was horrific. One of the supposed selling points was, "Why go camping with your kids for vacation; you don't own anything. Buy a timeshare and it is yours forever."
My wife and I caught each other's eye. Sorry, but the only thing that is forever is in heaven.
Five times in Psalm 37 we're told that the righteous will "inherit the land." (Verses 9, 11, 22, 29 & 34) It's not an earthly piece of real estate because they will "dwell in it forever." (v.29)
It's akin to Matthew 5:5. Those who are meek, humble, gentle... they will "inherit the earth,"
That's referring to the era of the New Heaven and the New Earth.
In the meantime, we live in a fallen world with evil people.
Listen to how they're described in Psalm 37:
Taking from others.
Borrowing and not paying back.
Plotting against the righteous, the afflicted, the needy, and the upright.
Spying so they know when to attack those same people.
All the while, they spread "like a luxuriant tree."
The righteous people they try to pull down are those who:
Trust in God.
Delight in God's law.
Exercise wisdom.
Practice justice.
Give to others.
That's also why the righteous are encouraged to:
"Rest in the Lord and wait patiently... those who wait will inherit the land." (vv.7-9)
"Wait for the Lord... [and you'll] inherit the land" (v.34) {New American Standard, 1995}
That can be tough when we see the wicked "spreading like a luxuriant tree."
But it's worth the wait.
Lord, sometimes we get impatient for immediate justice. Or at least, justice in our lifetime! Give us patience to wait--even if we have to wait for eternity.
We're tempted to look for something we can hold on to--whether it's a timeshare or something else. Instead, we ask You to hold on to us. Grip our hearts with Your strong hand. Protect us and guide us to our eternal home where we will inherit the land. In Jesus' name, Amen.
