Hebrews 12:10-13 - Discipline Therapy

One of my more vivid memories as a kid was from the summer before fourth grade. One evening after supper, even though I only had one roller skate that was functioning, I was trying to roller skate on that one skate. I hit a bump in the sidewalk and broke my leg. It was a spiral fracture that went up the bone like a barber pole. I had to wear a full length cast for the rest of the summer and into the beginning of fourth grade.

Years later, my dad studied physical therapy and worked with handicapped students. I've had physical therapy myself for different issues and know its benefits. But at the time, they didn't have physical therapy for a kid simply because he busted his leg.

While wearing the cast and hobbling on crutches, I got into the habit of letting my foot turn outward. I suspect it may have contributed to some other issues with my posture and skeletal structure.

Hebrews 12:10b–13 says:
"...God’s discipline is always good for us, so that we might share in his holiness. 11 No discipline is enjoyable while it is happening—it’s painful! But afterward there will be a peaceful harvest of right living for those who are trained in this way. 12 So take a new grip with your tired hands and strengthen your weak knees. 13 Mark out a straight path for your feet so that those who are weak and lame will not fall but become strong." (New Living Translation)

How many people would get physical therapy if it was called "Discipline Therapy," but that's what it is: training the body to function the way it's supposed to! How much more so with our spiritual well-being?

Lord, I don't have it in myself to run the race You've set out for me--let alone walk a straight line. Discipline is about humbly relying on the grace You freely offer (v.15). Keep my focus on Jesus who has already gone down this path, and done so victoriously (v.2). In His name, Amen.
