John 14:3-6 - Ancient GPS Discovered!

I was walking the dog last week and heard honking.
We both looked up.
Geese!

Overhead was a small V-formation of Canada geese, heading north. My heart gets happy when I see and hear them pulling spring along, right behind them.

Not all geese migrate but the ones that do amaze me. They know two things:
When and Where.
They know when to start moving, and they know where they are headed.
They stay orientated to Time and Space.

Humanity seems to be disoriented, lately. Like little kids in the back of the car we ask, "Are we there yet?" even when we don't even know where "there" is.

It's not just the kids. On an untraveled highway, in an unfamiliar city, even adults get lost. You say, "Use your phone!" That's not fool-proof, is it? Batteries run down; cell towers get out of range.

We're in good company. Jesus' closest friends couldn't seem to get their bearings. He had told them that He would be crucified, resurrected, and then return to heaven to prepare a place for them,
“'...so that you will always be with me where I am. 4 And you know the way to where I am going.' 5 'No, we don’t know, Lord,' Thomas said. 'We have no idea where you are going, so how can we know the way?' 6 Jesus told him, 'I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one can come to the Father except through me.'” (John 14:3-6, New Living Translation)

Where are we headed? Heaven.
What's it like? The phrase, "...come to the Father" means heaven is about being with God Himself.
How do we get there? The phrase, "except through Me" tells us we follow Jesus.
"Are we there yet?" Not yet, but God has that under control.

God of heaven and earth, in this Time and in this Place, we're easily disoriented, especially nowadays. Grant us faith to follow a Savior we haven't yet seen. Guide us through His Spirit (John 14:17) to keep our bearings on the "straight and narrow," (Matthew 7:14) to make our way home to You. In Jesus' name, Amen.
