Acts 20:6-12 What God did while Eutychus slept
I almost didn't write about this story, but it's such a unique one: about someone falling asleep during a sermon!
During Paul's travels, he spent a week with Christians in the city of Troas. Before leaving, he was going to share a communion service with them in a third-story room. This was Paul's last opportunity to preach and he wanted to make the most of it. As the historian, Luke doesn't tell us when service started, but Paul preached until midnight--and they hadn't even had the communion portion of the service, yet!
The room was crowded with people and the oil lamps burning, so air circulation was probably poor. Space being limited, a young man named Eutychus was sitting on a window sill. Between the stuffy air and the long-winded preaching, Eutychus fell asleep “and dropped three stories to his death below. 10 Paul went down, bent over him, and took him into his arms. 'Don’t worry,' he said, 'he’s alive!' 11 Then they all went back upstairs, shared in the Lord’s Supper, and ate together. Paul continued talking to them until dawn, and then he left. 12 Meanwhile, the young man was taken home alive and well, and everyone was greatly relieved.” (Acts 20:9b-12, New Living Translation, 2015). (Compare to 1 Kings 17:21; 2 Kings 4:32-33)
When Eutychus was resurrected did he even remember the free-fall from a third-floor window?
What was God doing while Eutychus slept--literally and figuratively? God didn't cause this accident; it happened because of human frailty. Yet it became the occasion of a memorable miracle. In fact, no record is made of what Paul preached. What they remembered were his words, "Don't worry, he's alive."
Lord, sometimes I lose focus and don't pay attention. It's not intentional, but sometimes it can result in serious mishap of one kind or another. In turn, others are grieved. I ask you to revive me and those around me in Your love and mercy, and bring honor to your name despite my humanity. Through Christ our Lord, Amen.
The illustration is from a website called "Bible Fun for Kids." Hmmmm. https://www.biblefunforkids.com/2012/12/eutychus.html
There's even a website with a coloring page about Eutychus: http://www.supercoloring.com/coloring-pages/eutychus-falls-out-of-the-window
That's better than a third website: "Teach Your Children - When We Should Stay Awake." I don't think that Luke recorded the story to warn children against falling asleep in church! https://www.jw.org/en/library/magazines/wp20111001/eutychus-when-stay-awake/
