2 Corinthians 5:17; Ephesians 4:22 - Unnecessities
Those car air fresheners shaped like pine tree...
Why are some rearview mirrors loaded with a dozen or more of them? Maybe the first air freshener had lost it's freshness. It was just a cardboard pine tree. Rather than replace them as they wore out, the owner of car just kept adding new air fresheners until a little forest dangled from the mirror.
Some people have started collecting face masks in the same way. They take off a used one and hang it on the mirror. Rather than throwing them away, they keep adding face masks. Used, dirty face masks. Instead of COVID, they'll die in a car accident because they couldn't see where they were driving!
It's easy to hold on to unnecessities.
The Bible says that:
"anyone who belongs to Christ has become a new person. The old life is gone; a new life has begun!" (2 Corinthians 5:17, New Living Translation, 2015)
But the Christian journey is living out the reality that began at conversion. That's why we're told to:
"throw off your old sinful nature and your former way of life, which is corrupted by lust and deception." (Ephesians 4:22, NLT)
Are any dirty masks hanging from your mirror? What old, corrupted ideas or stale habits are obscuring your view?
Father, Sometimes I don't feel particularly Christian. It's easy to hold on to the past simply because it's comfortable. Or it seems too much work to leave unnecessities behind. Freshen my heart with the life of Christ, with his mercies that come new to me every morning. (Lamentations 3:23) I look forward to the day when You proclaim: “Look, I am making everything new!” (Revelation 21:5, NLT) Amen.
