Hebrews 6:18–20 - The Anchor

Some periods of history have had more dramatic changes than others. We can't claim that 2020 was the biggest turning point in all of history, but many people are living through changes they never imagined.

Touchstones give a sense of belonging. They may be objects, places, routines, or relationships. They are anything that give a sense of stability when most everything else changes. Call them landmarks. Regardless, when landmarks or touchstones are disturbed, it's greatly disorienting.

This is why, "God has given both his promise and his oath. These two things are unchangeable because it is impossible for God to lie. Therefore, we who have fled to him for refuge can have great confidence as we hold to the hope that lies before us." (Hebrews 6:18, New Living Translation)

That which keeps us oriented is unseen. The world around us can be observed and measured by science, but never created by science. The world we know shifts and changes unpredictably. God in heaven is the only thing that transcends the world He created.

When I was a boy, I'd take a rowboat out into a lake and throw an anchor overboard. It was just a coffee can filled with concrete. An eyehook was embedded in the top for the rope to be attached... a rope that was tied to the boat. The boat would drift in a circle and face different directions, depending on the wind and water currents. But the changes around me didn't matter because I knew the anchor would keep me oriented to where I needed to be.

In waiting to see God in heaven, we have an anchor that transcends not only space, but time itself.

"19 This hope is a strong and trustworthy anchor for our souls. It leads us through the curtain into God’s inner sanctuary. 20 Jesus has already gone in there for us..." (Hebrews 6:18–20, New Living Translation)

Father in heaven, whether it is minor glitches to our daily routine, or seismic shifts that disturb our understanding of reality, give us faith to trust the anchor you've set in place for us... an anchor up ahead in heaven. In the name of Jesus, who holds the other end of the rope, we pray. Amen.
