Matthew 9:9 - When Google Maps Don't Work

Yesterday, my wife and I heard a sermon from Mark's Gospel. Jesus said,
“If people want to follow me, they must give up the things they want. They must be willing even to give up their lives to follow me.” (Mark 8:34, New Century Version)

The challenge of the sermon--one we needed to hear--was to sign a contract with God: "No Matter What... I will follow Jesus."

However, on the way home I started to think about it.  I'd like Jesus to text the link for a Google Map to my phone. I want to know the destination, mileage, time of arrival, and any detours.  Doesn't Jesus understand I need that information ahead of time?

When He was on earth, other than one or two times of riding a donkey (Matthew 2:13; 21:7) or riding in a boat, Jesus usually walked. Walking is done one step at a time, and Jesus didn't always map out each day's destination for those who were following Him. There were interruptions and detours: storms on the sea (Matthew 8:24), people needing healing (Matthew 14:14). Those who followed Jesus did so one step at a time.

Once, “Jesus... saw a man named Matthew sitting in the tax collector’s booth. Jesus said to him, “Follow me,” and he stood up and followed Jesus.”  (Matthew 9:9, New Century Version) Matthew had no idea what was up ahead. That's the point of following Jesus. We aren't following Google Maps. We are following a Person. He doesn't give us tour information. He gives Himself.

Lord, Sometimes I detect a pattern of where it seems like You are headed. I start to create a trajectory for a destination. Forgive my foolish presumption. Remind me to find joy in being led one step at a time because it means staying close to One who loves me, who will always lead me in the paths of righteousness for His name's sake (Psalm 23:3). Amen.
