Psalm 8:1-2 - Baby Praises
Psalm 8 is a painting of creation, and how it reflects the glory of the Creator. The moon and stars, beasts of the field, birds of the air, fish of the sea... they all reflect His glory. The crowning point of creation is humanity as the stewards of God's creation.
The psalm opens with these words:
"O Lord, our Lord, your majestic name fills the earth! Your glory is higher than the heavens. 2 You have taught children and infants to tell of your strength..."
[Then the verse continues with an enigmatic result.]
"...silencing your enemies and all who oppose you." Psalm 8:1–2, New Living Translation
Of everything in creation, how is it that children and infants top the list of things that praise God? Whether it's because they are hungry or simply want to be held, God hears the cries of babies as prayers. And if He hears their distress He certainly hears their gratitude as well.
Even mountains and hills "shout for joy" and trees "clap their hands" in praise to God (Isaiah 55:12, NASB). How much more so the innocent cooing and babbling of a happy baby? It makes me smile to hear such non-verbal contentment of my baby grandchildren. How much more so their heavenly Father?
So how does this silence God's enemies? It's because God's detractors cannot create. They can manipulate creation, but they cannot make life out of nothing. All that Satan, the chief enemy, can do is kill and destroy (John 10:10a). Yet every noise a baby makes echoes the creative power of God.
Lord in heaven, "You are holy, enthroned on the praises of Israel. 4 Our ancestors trusted in you, and you rescued them. 5 They cried out to you and were saved. They trusted in you and were never disgraced." (Psalm 22:3-5, NLT) Give us the humility and simplicity to join children and infants in worshipping you--even though Your glory and love can never be fully described with words. Amen
