Psalm 107:19-20 - Painting myself into a corner
One of the jobs I had, working my way through school, was being a custodial supervisor for the college and seminary I attended. While students were away for the summer months we did deep cleaning projects like shampooing carpets and refinishing floors.
There was one classroom where I had my crew completely strip the old floor finish, rinse it thoroughly so no stripper was left to ruin the new finish, and air dry it with fans. The actual task of applying the floor finish I did myself to make sure it was done right.
Right.
That day, I found out what is meant by the expression, "painting yourself into a corner." Except it wasn't wasn't paint, it was acrylic floor finish. I couldn't believe I was so stupid as to start at the door of the room and literally paint myself into a corner. I stood there, looking very foolish. I can't remember if I waited for the floor to dry or if I managed to crawl over an air conditioning unit and out the first floor window. What I do remember was my complete embarrassment.
That's not the first or last time I've painted myself into a corner--figuratively if not literally. I wouldn't tell the story except I know it's human nature to be trapped by our own foolishness.
"17 Some became fools through their rebellious ways and suffered affliction because of their iniquities. 18 They loathed all food and drew near the gates of death. 19 Then they cried to the Lord in their trouble, and he saved them from their distress. 20 He sent forth his word and healed them; he rescued them from the grave." (Psalm 107:17–20, New International Version, 1984)
Not every foolish thing we do is because of rebellion or sin, though that's a possible factor. Regardless, God is gracious enough to hear our cry for help.
Father, You are merciful to not only hear us when we cry out to you. You not only hear, but you act on our behalf to rescue us. Grant us the humility to admit our need to be rescued, and even to be forgiven. And we will "give thanks for Your unfailing love... and tell of Your works with songs of joy." (vv.21-22). Amen.
