Psalm 62:8 - Poured-out Prayers

King David wrote:

"O my people, trust in him at all times. Pour out your heart to him, for God is our refuge."
(Psalm 62:8, New Living Translation, 2015.)

The word "pour" means to pour out totally, leaving nothing further to pour. For example, when they poured out blood sacrifices on an altar, or they poured out infectious material in a garbage dump. The pouring was utter and complete. (Exodus 29:12; 14:41)

In trying to illustrate the word, I was pouring cherry juice from a pitcher into a small glass. I was so busy pouring the last bit of juice out of the pitcher while aiming my phone camera that I didn't see that the glass was about to overflow.

Fortunately, when we pour out our heart to God, His heart is bigger than ours. He can hold everything we have to tell Him.

So what holds us back from pouring out our heart to God?

Perhaps we only pray about the urgent things that first come to mind, and forget the less pressing issues in our lives.

Perhaps there are unresolved, yet-unanswered prayers that we think aren't worth bringing up again.

Perhaps we are overthinking exactly how to pray about a concern.

Perhaps we don't take enough time to pour out everything to God.

Perhaps there are prayers for which we can't seem to find words.

The place to begin is found in the verse quoted, "trust in Him at all times." That gives us confidence to pour our hearts out to God.

God our refuge, Give us faith to pray. Whether our prayers are urgent or not, whether we use the "right" words or not, whether we're praying the same prayer we've offered countless times before, give us confidence to "pour out our heart" to You. In Christ's name we come to You. Amen.

And yes, the juice overflowed the glass while I was trying to snap the photo!
