Psalm 70:4-5 - My Deliverer

"God is my deliverer." That seems like a simple, straightforward statement.

Here's the context for one time when David wrote that:
“Let all who seek You rejoice and be glad in You; And let those who love Your salvation say continually, 'Let God be magnified.' 5 But I am afflicted and needy; Hasten to me, O God! You are my help and my deliverer; O Lord, do not delay.” (Psalm 70:4–5, New American Standard Bible, 1995)

David admited that some people were experiencing circumstances where they repeatedly said, "God is great!" (ESV) At times he echoed that same sentiment.

But at the time David wrote this Psalm during a time when the best he could say is as "I am poor and need; please hurry to my aid." That is why he called out to God as his help and deliverer.

Before God can be my deliverer, I have to acknowledge that I need help, that I need to be freed of whatever is holding me back. When was the last time you heard someone say, "I can do this myself" or, "I got this!"? Perhaps they could, but how often has stubborn pride led to unavoidable accidents or worse?

God offers His help, His grace freely. But it is only activated in the lives of those humble enough to receive it. (James 4:6; 1 Peter 5:5)

Lord, For starters... open my heart and mind to see all the things from which I need to be delivered. Once I sense my need, deliver me from pride that thinks I can live my life without Your help. In Jesus name, Amen.
