1 John 1:1-2 - Driving from 1000 feet up

I generally don't remember my dreams, but some are so vivid that even when a random series of events becomes fuzzy in my waking moments, the image and the feelings remain.

One particular dream left me with a frustrating sense of being isolated and disconnected. I was driving through the Loop--downtown Chicago. There was the regular car traffic: drivers ready to honk their horn (or give the "Chicago Salute," as it's called) if I got in their way. Bus drivers didn't honk, they merely muscled their bigger vehicles around traffic. Taxi drivers just darted in front of me to pick up their next rider.

Only in my dream, I was floating about a thousand feet above the ground and operating my car remotely. And my car was invisible. (Of course. It was a dream!) So I was maneuvering through mad-cap traffic where no one could see me, even though I could see ahead of the next several vehicles.

I won't even attempt to analyze my dream. I'll leave that to some psychotherapist. But it seemed to epitomize a sense of dis-connect-ed-ness. While I could observe things from a distance, I was not a part of them.

Thank God that while He can take in the big picture, the overview of everything on earth, He isn't detached from humanity.

John described what it was like to live for three years with Jesus, with God-on-earth:
"We proclaim to you the one who existed from the beginning, whom we have heard and seen. We saw him with our own eyes and touched him with our own hands. He is the Word of life. This one who is life itself was revealed to us, and we have seen him. And now we testify and proclaim to you that he is the one who is eternal life. He was with the Father, and then he was revealed to us." (1 John 1:1–2, New Living Translation, 2015)

Jesus ate and drank food (Matthew 26:26-28; Luke 24:42-43), He fell asleep when tired (Matthew 8:24), He faced temptation (Luke 4:1-13). God-on-earth; God-in-Flesh.

Lord, I'm thankful that You don't love us "from a distance." You don't direct traffic by remote control. Rather, You entered our world and lived at ground level where we live day in and day out.
But I'm one that gets caught up in the busyness, the "traffic" around me. I know You hold my hand... but give me a squeeze now and then to remind me that You came and never left me alone. Amen.
