Matthew 10:42 - Significant Insignificance

I know a couple different people who have started making bread using their own sourdough starter. It's a fascinating process to make bread from scratch without buying yeast at the store. I can't wait to try doing it myself. In the meantime, I've been able to enjoy watching others make bread--and eating the results!

One has to make a slash or two in the top of the unbaked loaf, letting steam to escape during baking. My son has been getting very artistic with his bread making, though, beyond an utilitarian slash. Using a razor blade, he makes a few nicks in the loaf before baking it. If you didn't see the nicks being made, you may not even notices them... until the loaf comes out of the oven. Then there's a beautiful pattern: a stalk of wheat on the side of the bread loaf.

Little  actions may seem insignificant, but God keeps track of the pattern they create.

"And if you give even a cup of cold water to one of the least of my followers, you will surely be rewarded.” (Matthew 10:42, New Living Translation, 2015) Some translations say, "if you give a cup of cold water to one of these little ones..."

Whether it's a little child or someone small in reputation--easily ignored--God doesn't overlook the smallest kindness we do for them.

Father, Don't let us get distracted in doing the good deeds that are sure to be noticed, the kindness done to "important," noticeable people. Fill our lives with loving actions throughout the day, deeds that are easily overlooked. Create a pattern of love that becomes something beautiful in Your sight. In the strength of Christ our Redeemer we pray, Amen.
